Sea turtles in Cyprus: our fight for their protection in the face of tourism

From diving professionals to sea turtle rescuers:

We, Tamara and Daniel, have been living in Cyprus since the beginning of 2018. United by our love of diving and the sea, we have turned our passion into our profession. First as PADI Divemasters, later as diving instructors, and since 2020 we have been running our own diving school. But our hearts beat for something bigger: the protection of sea turtles.

Fascination and disillusionment:

During countless dives, we repeatedly encountered sea turtles - majestic animals that captivated us. But our joy soon turned to concern. We saw the threats these gentle giants face: plastic waste, illegal fishing, the destruction of their habitat and the growing threat of tourism.

Our fight for protection:

The sad discovery of a dead sea turtle, tangled in fishing lines, was the turning point. At that moment, we knew we had to act. And so, out of grief and determination, the Xenios project was born.

Since then, we have been working tirelessly to protect sea turtles in Cyprus.

Our mission:

  • Education: We raise awareness of the importance of sea turtle conservation and show how everyone can contribute.
  • Cleaning: During regular dives we clear the sea of garbage that can pose a danger to the turtles.
  • Research: By collecting data on sea turtles off Cyprus, we are contributing to a better understanding of these animals and their conservation.
  • Collaboration with tourism: We work with the tourism industry to find sustainable solutions that balance sea turtle conservation with the needs of tourists.

Together for a future with sea turtles:

Our commitment is important to us. We show that every individual can make a difference. With our Xenios project, we give Cyprus' sea turtles hope for a future in which they can swim freely and safely.
